Jimmie Cox was a vaudeville comedian and made no recordings as either a blues or jazz artist. Bessie Smith toured with him in 1929 and learned this tune directly from him. The song was subsequently recorded by Peter Paul and Mary, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, BB King, Sam Cooke and John Lennon.
