This song was made famous at the turn of the century in vaudeville by Bert Williams and was described by James Gawin in the liner notes of CD Broadway, blues, ballads as "a hard-luck story, an early example of race consciousness replete with double entendre".
Bert Williams (Antigua 1874 - New York 1922) was a black ragtime singer, dancer and comic, described by W. C. Fields as "the funniest man I ever saw and the saddest man I ever knew". He was immortalised by Duke Ellington in "Portrait of Bert Williams".
